How do you define healthy? Some people think good health means being disease-free and physically and emotionally balanced. For others, healthy might be looking fit and feeling strong.

Regardless of how you define it, most of us agree that we want to be healthy. But are you doing everything you can to reach that goal? After all, your body is your temple, and you must take care of it.

Pretty much everyone gets that healthy living starts with the basics. Eating a well-balanced diet with various healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein, is essential. Exercising regularly is also crucial.

But there are even more things you can do to live a healthy life. Remember, good health is about more than exercise and healthy eating. Consider the following:

1. Socialize

Regular social interactions and friendships suit your mental and physical health. According to Harvard Medical School, people with solid relationships get sick less often and live longer. Regardless of how busy you are, make time to hang out with your friends and family as often as possible.

2. Own a pet

Whether you’re a cat person or a dog person, spending time with a pet can be good for you. Studies indicate that pets can lower blood pressure and decrease stress. Plus, who

doesn’t want all that unconditional love after a long day at work?

3. Get enough sleep

Getting enough zzzs is critical for good health. A lack of sleep can impact your weight, motivation, and immune system. Sleep deprivation can have the same effect on your mental abilities as being tipsy. Although everyone’s needs vary, most adults should try to get seven to nine hours of sleep a night.

4. Find purpose

Finding what you love to do and pursuing it is not always as easy as it sounds. But it’s worth the effort. Living a purposeful life will make you happier, which improves your overall well-being. So whether it’s teaching children, creating music, or volunteering your time to a good cause, follow your heart.

5. Drink plenty of water

Your body needs water to function correctly. Drinking enough water improves digestion, hydrates your skin, and helps you feel full, which may prevent overeating. Headaches, fatigue, and dry skin can all be symptoms of mild dehydration.

6. Take care of your pearly whites

Your oral health contributes to your overall health. Gum disease is associated with an increased risk of diabetes and cardiac problems. Protect your choppers by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist twice a year.

7. Focus on the positive

Let’s face it, sometimes focusing on the negative is easy. But spending too much time dwelling on what’s going wrong can lead to increased stress and physical problems, such as headaches and digestive issues. Take a step back and remember what you’re grateful for. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies have indicated that keeping a positive outlook can boost the immune system and even increase lifespan.
